Dundee United left Celtic Park with a two-all draw after leading for more than half an hour. Camilo Durán put Celtic ahead in the eighteenth minute. Zac Sapsford equalised ten minutes later, and Neil Farrugia turned the match around three minutes after that. Liam Scales headed Celtic level in the sixty-fifth minute. The point leaves United fifth in the Premiership with sixteen points from eleven games, one behind Dundee and one above Falkirk.
United’s response to the opening goal was the strongest spell of the night. Lyall Cameron’s delivery found Sapsford, whose movement across the defender created the space for a controlled header into the far corner. Another delivery then caused confusion in the Celtic box, and Farrugia reacted first to put United ahead. Sapsford has now scored in consecutive matches after also getting the winner against Aberdeen on Saturday.
Celtic made two changes at half-time and drove United back for long periods. Jack Walton made important saves, while Bert Esselink and Michael Forbes dealt with sustained pressure in the middle of the defence. Scales eventually equalised from Jota’s cross, but United still carried a threat on the break and forced Sam Johnstone into saves. Jim Goodwin felt the team were unfortunate not to turn one of those late counterattacks into a winner.
Goodwin said the dressing room was disappointed because United had been so close to ending the long wait for a league victory at Celtic Park. He called the opening goal a gift, but praised the reaction and the resilience shown after the interval. The manager said United will not over-celebrate a draw, even at the league leaders, although he accepted most people would have taken a point before kick-off.
Goodwin also singled out Sapsford’s patience after the striker had to wait for a run as the number nine. He described him as a natural goalscorer who enjoys major occasions. The manager praised both full-backs for handling four different Celtic wingers and said the work rate around the defence was a major reason United held on under heavy pressure.
The draw keeps United’s league run going and completes a strong October. Goodwin said sixteen points from eleven matches is a healthy position, even though he believes the team could have more. United now have a free weekend.
