Tonight is Melbourne Derby night at AAMI Park. Victory host City at twenty to eight, chasing a third straight win in the fixture and their first league points of the season. Harry Sawyer is available again after the soreness that kept him out in Wellington. Louis D’Arrigo remains the only listed absentee. Gates open at six. Juan Mata will address the crowd before kick-off and complete a lap of the pitch.
Giovanni Savarese says the full preparation week has left Victory fresher after three competitive matches in nine days. He expects City to value possession, but says his side must be ready to hurt opponents in different ways and adapt as the game changes. Savarese knows the derby environment after winning four straight Portland against Seattle clashes in Major League Soccer.
Philipp Ziereis also brings derby experience from Germany. He says tonight will be about emotion, total commitment and winning the small details. Denis Genreau enters the match with three assists across Victory’s last two games. Charles Nduka is also looking to score in a second straight league appearance after his equaliser in Wellington.
On international duty, Australia lost three-one to Spain at the Under-17 Women’s World Cup. Sienna Calvanese played the second half and Leyla Hussein was an unused substitute. Australia still have a path to the knockout stage and face Mexico at two o’clock on Monday morning, Melbourne time, in the final group match.
In the Women’s game, Victory face Wellington Phoenix tomorrow morning. Wellington will be without captain CJ Bott and four injured players. New signing Lara Wall has entered the Phoenix squad. Bev Priestman says Victory can be dynamic in attack and highlighted Claudia Bunge and Kayla Morrison as the experienced centre-backs her side must overcome.
